Lot Essay

THE SITTER WAS THE WIFE OF JAMES FLETCHER AND THE DAUGHTER OF MRS. ISABELLA FELL, WHO WERE ALSO PAINTED BY ROMNEY. MRS. ISABELLA FELL WAS PROBABLY THE WIFE OF ROMNEY'S SCHOOLMASTER AT DENDRON.

GEORGE ROMNEY WENT TO LONDON IN 1762 WHERE HE QUICKLY ESTABLISHED HIMSELF AS A PAINTER OF HISTORICAL SUBJECTS AND PORTRAITS. THIS PORTRAIT DATES TO CIRCA 1765 AND IS CHARACTERISED BY THE ELONGATED LINEARITY AND RESTRAINED PALETTE THAT TYPIFIES ROMNEY'S PORTRAITS OF THIS PERIOD AND BEFORE HIS VISIT TO ITALY IN 1773.
