Lot Essay

The Second World War had a profound effect on Vaughan. Initially a conscientious objector, in 1941 he joined the Pioneer Corps, sketching whenever he could. Working with Christopher Fry and others provided him with the intellectual company and stimulus he needed and the figure compositions of his fellow soldiers developed strong mythological elements. The present work shows three nude figures in the pose of classical gods.
