A FINE AND RARE LUBA STOOL
Carved as a kneeling female figure, the massive head tilted slightly to one side and with carved lenticular eyes, triangular nose and wide mouth, a notched band at the hairline and cruciform coiffure at the rear, keloid scarification on the abdomen, a band of large blue and white beads about the neck, the arms raised to the seat above, on circular base, dark glossy patina

The generous volumes of the carytid of the present stool, especially the large head, is found in early carvings collected among the central Luba around 1900 - e.g. two stools illustrated in Hausenstein, W., Barbaren und Klassiker, Munich, 1922, Pl.52 and 53, and a half figure in the Museum für Völkerkunde, Munich, Pl.50
