Mathieu Criaerd, maître in 1738
This elegant commode is part of a group of closely related commodes executed by Criaerd in the 1740s, possibly under the direction of the celebrated marchand-mercier Thomas-Joachim Hebert, who was one of the main fournisseurs of costly lacquer furniture to the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne. Indeed, the commode made by BVRB and supplied by Hebert for Queen Marie Leczinska's use at Fontainebleau in 1737 is the earliest example of lacquer-mounted furniture delivered to the Garde-Meuble. The group of related commodes includes an example with very similar lacquer or japanned decoration, framed by a virtually identical trellis border, which was sold by Ader, Paris, 28 November 1972, lot 151; an unstamped commode, but certainly by Criaerd, with identical chutes and apron mount, which was sold at Sotheby's London, 25 June 1982, lot 36.
