Lot Essay

The maiden figures of these candelabra are virtually identical to those on a pair of Louis XVI candleticks acquired by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild which are now at Waddesdon Manor. They are discussed by G. de Bellaigue in The James A. de Rothschild Collection at Waddesdon Manor, Fribourg, 1974, vol. II, p. 706, no. 174. A further pair, but without the floral garlands between the branches, was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 19 May 1983, lot 32.
