Engravings, six plates from the set of twelve, depicting the sculpture collection formed by Francois Girardon, including his own work and those after the antique, also works by Giambologna, Gianlorenzo Bernini, Francois Du Quesnoy and others, on heavy laid paper, watermarked Double-headed Eagle, countermark T D with a Beehive (cf Heawood 1322, Paris 18th Century), three of the six sheets double page (on two joined sheets), each plate mounted on guards, in blue paper wrappers, occasional foxing, waterstaining and handling defects, the covers worn. Bound with an unrelated (?) plate showing a plan of Cardinal Richelieu's tomb.

Lot Essay

Francois Girardon (1628-1715) was court sculptor to Louis XIV and a great collector of sculpture himself. Towards the end of his life, he commissioned a series of 13 engravings of his collection, set in an imaginary interior, to record it for posterity.
