The cylindrical case with cavorting amorini with musical instruments above, on a plinth with a panel cast in relief with opposing gryphons, and flanked to each side by a classically draped, seated maidens, holding a tambourine and a triangle respectively, on a base with further relief cast decoration, on reeded toupie feet, with white enamelled Roman dial, twin barrel movement and countwheel strike on bell, the movement inscribed Robin a Paris, with pendulum and key

Lot Essay

Robert Robin (1742-1799) in 1777 became Clockmaker to His Royal Highness the Duc de Chartres and in 1782 he became Clockmaker to the King. The business was continued by his two sons Nicholas-Robert Robin (1775-1816), who later became horloger to Louis XVIII, and his brother Jean-Joseph Robin (1806-1858).
