Lot Essay

A drawing of the lake at Montmorency with the tombs of Voltaire and Rousseau is in the Museo Napoleonico, Rome, A. Ottani Cavina, op. cit., fig. 758. The arrangement of the structures around the lake in the present drawing is strongly reminiscent of parks designed in England at about this period, most notably Stourhead in Wiltshire.
