A French gilt-metal striking small table clock
A*F, possibly Augustin Forfaict. Circa 1600
The dial with applied gilt Roman chapter ring with touchpieces and later blued steel arrowhead hand, the dial plate cast and engraved with foliate strapwork on a hatched ground, two-tier steel and brass movement, the going train on the upper tier with long thin gut fusee to a gilt barrel with pinned end caps, verge escapement with replaced steel balance and balance cock, the strike train within the lower tier with gilt going barrel, restored countwheel on the back plate and strike on a bell above the movement secured by four steel straps pinned to the top pillars, the re-gilt case engraved overall with inhabited foliage, small fusee viewing door to reverse and surmounted by a foliate pierced domed top with urn finial, the detachable base plate similarly engraved and signed with the initials A*F
