A French gilt-metal striking small table clock
Unsigned, probably Blois. Circa 1600
The case band decorated with formalised strapwork with foliage on a hatched ground, the entrelac pierced and engraved dome housing the bell and surmounted by a gilt dial with Roman chapters (I to XII) and foliate engraved centre with later blued steel hand, the movement with circular gilt-brass plates secured by three slender steel pillars pinned to the front plate and with steel bun feet on the back plate, the going train with steel end-capped spring barrel and narrow gut fusee, restored verge escapement with later steel balance and pinned foliate engraved and pierced balance cock, capped spring barrel and gut fusee to the strike train with later countwheel positioned on the top plate, the back plate applied with later blued steel ratchet-and-clicks and later elaborate blued steel wishbone spring catches, the strike sounding on a bell secured to a steel strap pinned to the top plate
