A Queen Anne ebony and gilt-brass mounted striking bracket clock with pull quarter repeat
Thomas Tompion, No.376. Circa 1705
The case with faceted and foliate-clasped gilt-brass handle to a moulded cushion top, with silk-backed and scroll-pierced sound frets to the sides above glazed panels and to the top rail of the front door, with later gilt-metal escutcheons to the side rails, the moulded plinth on ebony block feet, the 6 x 6¾in. gilt-brass dial with double-screwed foliate lower spandrels to the silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with sword hilt half hour and cross half quarter hour markers, matted centre with mock pendulum aperture, delicate blued steel hands, with silvered subsidiary rings above for regulation and strike/not strike, with tulip-pierced blued steel hands, regulation adjusted by the key and strike/silent with brass knobs for manual change, signed Tho. Tompion Londini Fecit within a foliate scroll cartouche between the subsidiary rings, with punched number 376 to the reverse of the dial, with latches to the dial feet and to the seven pillars securing the thick brass plates, twin fusees (chain lines) with verge escapement, the pendulum suspended from a chamfered brass rise-and-fall arm, pull quarter repeat on Tompion's system from either side of the case via inter-connecting chamfered blued steel double-cocked levers pivoted on the back plate, the hours and quarters struck on a large and a small bell respectively, the back plate profusely engraved with scrolling foliage and signed in the centre Tho Tompion LONDINI Fecit within a cartouche, numbered on the base 376 and also on the base of the front plate; secured to the case by means of two steel bolts through the base pillars and with two brass brackets to the sides
