FORD DESERT EXCURSION CONCEPT
2000

Light sandalwood with two tone grey leather interior

"Rugged luxury", that's what the Desert Excursion concept says loud and clear.
Ford's Excursion SUV is based on the Super Duty F-350 truck and the Desert Excursion concept takes advantage of all the "Built Ford Tough" attributes it can. The interior, however, is as inviting as the smoking lounge at an exclusive club.
The Desert Excursion concept is built on an F-350 chassis with a 4-door cab and a pickup bed. Its design features a unique body color grille and front fascia. The body color front bumper houses PIAA Ion Crystal navigator and fog lamps. The projector-style headlights are protected behind faired-in plastic covers. A winch is located behind the center of the bumper.
Custom tail lights replicate the look of the headlights and are complemented by high intensity backup lights flanking the license plate housing. The bed features a tailgate extension for additional load capacity. The rear window is removable and the back of the cab folds down to further extend the bed's load carrying area into the cab. Expanded loading is further facilitated by folding rear seats.
The Desert Excursion concept rides on 16" heavy duty steel wheels with plastic trim rings. Tires are 36x12.50R-16LT Super Swamper tires. The fuel filler utilizes a flush-mount aircraft-style aluminum cap. Steps with anti-slip inserts are integrated with the body sills.
Inside, the Desert Excursion concept accommodates four leather-covered bucket seats. Tubing grab rails are provided between the seats as are overhead aluminum grab rails with leather handles for rough terrain. Desert Excursion concept's practical, rugged focus is continued through the interior which has body-color painted metal floors with open pattern rubber mats to brush off sand and mud while still providing practical footing. The doors feature mesh pockets for ample storage.
In keeping with its go-anywhere image the dash is highlighted by a large navigation display.
Desert Excursion is, however, a show concept. Its prominent nav display is a dummy, as are most of its controls and gauges. While the cab area is built of steel, much of the rear bed and rocker panels are constructed from fiberglass. Its paint and interior are in excellent cosmetic condition. Also in keeping with its show days, the rear tail gate can be operated electronically using a key fob, provided an AC 110 power supply is available. The rear window also worked at one stage, and the driving lights also operate.
The Desert Excursion concept has "presence". Rugged, luxurious presence.
