AN EXTRAORDINARY COLLECTION OF FINE AND RARE WINES FROM THE CELLAR OF MR. EDWARD LAZARUS
Ed is an old friend and respected collector who I must have met in the Heublein auction days and certainly at several major tastings in the mid-80s, notably at Bipin Desai's remarkable events.
The extent of his interests and the sheer quality of the wines from his cellar that have been consigned to this sale speaks for itself. Only time and space prevent me from writing several paragraphs about every single wine.
Some, like Lafite '45 and, for example, Latour '61 need no introduction from me so I have concentrated on those wines that have particularly caught my eye or might be somewhat less familiar.
All in all, many of the wines here, I would be proud and privileged to have in my own cellar.
Michael Broadbent M.W.
We are honoured to represent this exceptional offering of rare wines from an equally exceptional collector. It was my privilege to catalogue these wines which were principally acquired from early Christie's and Heublein auctions under the direction of Michael Broadbent.
There are so many highlights that it seems almost impossible to pick them out. The rarity and condition will speak for themselves, but we must point collectors to the vast array of magnums from the greatest Bordeaux vintages of the twentieth century as well as some exceptionally rare Burgundies. In California, we have some true classics from Inglenook, BV and Heitz.
These lots represent an exceptional opportunity to acquire rare wines from a most knowledgeable collector.
Michael Henley
Removed from a custom-built temperature and humidity controlled home cellar.
Château Lafite-Rothschild--Vintage 1868
Pauillac, 1er cru classé
Loose, damaged capsule. Slightly bin-soiled label. Level: base of neck
A historic vintage. It was the peak of the fabulous pre-phylloxera market. Prices were, by the light of the times, colossally high. It was also the year that Baron James de Rothschild bought Lafite, for a record 4 million francs. I have several notes. At 120 years of age it was still a charmer; rich rosehip colour; bouquet that opened up fragrantly in the glass, lovely flavour. MB.
