Château Mouton-Rothschild--Vintage 1924
Pauillac, 1er cru classé
Bin-soiled label. Level: top shoulder
Yet another historic bottle. In 1920 the young playboy Baron Philippe de Rothschild was put in charge of the family's neglected Château, 1924 was Baron Philippe's first major vintage. He caused a sensation in Bordeaux by announcing that from then onwards, inlike other top growths, his wine would be Château bottled and, instead of a rather demure traditional label he commissioned an artist friend Carlu to design an eye-catching art-déco label. I have tasted the wine on a couple of occasions in the mid-80s: a most enchanting wine, "glorious", harmonious; clearly a young genius at work! MB
