Provenance
Lady Stirling of Ardoch (d. 1788) in the year of her marriage to a Scottish baronet, Sir William Stirling of Ardoch (d. 1799). Christian Stirling was the daughter of a famous Edinburgh advocate, John Erskine of Carnoch (1695-1763); her husband was born in Russia and brought up in Grosvenor Square and eventually inherited the wealth accumulated by his maternal grandfather, Thomas Gordon, Admiral of the Fleet to the Empress Anne of Russia.

The design of the silk is very close to a series of designs by the firm L. Galy Gallien of Place des Terraux, Lyons, now in the Victoria and Albert Museum. In particular T.423-1972 illustrated plate 296, Nathalie Rothstein, Silk Designs of the Eighteenth Century, and also silks in the French order book T.373-1972.
