Lot Essay

This mirror, though closely related to mid-18th Century English or American 'Constitution' mirrors (see H.F. Schiffer, The Mirror Book, Pennsylvania, 1983, pp. 87, 91 and 95), was possibly made in the workshops of a North German or Danish cabinet-maker. The extensive trade between the Northern German, Scandinavian and English ports had brought this style to places such as Altona, near Hamburg, where local workshops produced similar parcel-gilt mirrors veneered in walnut or mahogany until the last quarter of the 18th Century (see A.-I. Kratz, Altonaer Möbel des Rokoko und Klassizismus, Hamburg, 1988, cat. 85-87).

A closely related mirror is illustrated in G. Child, World Mirrors, London, 1990, p. 231, ill. 485. A similar mirror was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 8 July 1988, lot 39.
