The form of this casket with its historical decoration combined with hardstone is typical of the work James Aldridge, particularly those pieces commissioned by the celebrated collector William Beckford (1759-1844). A number of silver-gilt mounted agate vessels were produced by Aldridge for Beckford, such as the cup and cover of 1815 in which Aldridge combined chalcedony knops and an agate bowl and cover to create a magnificent cabinet object (see 'Beckford's Cup of Rapture', Country Life, 16 August 2001, p. 60).
