Lot Essay

During the first half of the 1880's, while living in Veneux-Nadon, Les Sablons and Moret, Sisley frequented the port of Saint-Mamm/ges at the confluence of the rivers Seine and Loing. It is here that he painted over a number of years, views of both the picturesque river bank, such as La Berge a Saint-Mam/ges, and the working quays. (S.Patin, Alfred Sisley, exh.cat London July 1992-June 1993, p.206).
The present picture was first acquired by the famous collector and singer Jean-Baptiste Faure (fig.1). Sisley was amongst his favourite artists, along with Pissarro, Manet, Monet, and Degas. Later this work was sold to Durand Ruel who exhibited at the Grafton Gallery in 1905 (fig.2) during an exhibition that included some of the greatest masters such as Cezanne, Morisot and others.
