Lot Essay
In 1989 Zahalka produced a series of photographic prints set against a painted backdrop, which were exhibited under the title Bondi: Playground of the Pacific. Referencing images from Australian art history, Zahalka used her audience's familiarity with the artistic precedents to subvert the popular notion of the bronzed beach-going Aussie, which the original images had perpetuated. The Sunbather #2 replicates the pose and setting of Max Dupain's iconic image The Sunbather, but the fair skin and red hair of Zahalka's model makes it impossible to attribute to this beach-goer the same cultural status. In a gentle and humorous manner, Zahalka questions contemporary notions of Australian self-perception and identity.
