An early 18th-Century silver compass sundial,
signed on the horizontal plate Butterfield AParis, engraved with the hours for latitudes 52°, 49°, 46° and 43°, the compass with initials for sixteen compass points, half on the needle in blued-iron and with a glazed cover, the folding gnomon with bird-shaped pointer and graduated 40°-60°, the underside engraved with the latitudes for twenty-six continental cities and towns, supported on turned silver foot, and contained in original red plush-lined, fishskin-covered case -- 2½in. (6cm.) long
