A fine early 18th-Century brass horizontal compass sundial,
signed on the horizontal plate Butterfield AParis, engraved with hours for latitudes 52°, 49°, 46° and 43°, the compass with initials for sixteen compass points, blued-iron needle with brass cap and glazed cover, the folding gnomon with bird-shaped pointer and graduated 40°-60°, the underside engraved with the latitudes for thirty-one continental cities and town, supported on turned brass foot -- 3 1/8in. (18cm.) long
