A George III mahogany longcase clock with alarm, circa 1780
The breakarch hood surmounted by giltwood onion finials, with outset brass stop-fluted columns to the front and silk-backed diamond-pierced sound frets to the sides, the breakarch trunk door with moulded frame and flanked by brass stop-fluted three-quarter columns, the plinth with raised panel with moulded frame and on stepped base with wavy apron, the 12in. brass dial with foliate spandrels to a silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring, the centre also silvered and with recessed seconds disc and date aperture, signed John Coleman London, with central alarm-setting disc, pierced and blued steel hands, with strike/silent ring in the arch above, the five pillar movement with anchor escapement and rack strike, trip repeat and alarm on bell -- 92in. (234cm.) high
