THE HERB BRIDGES "GONE WITH THE WIND" COLLECTION
Herb Bridges is a world-renowned collector, lecturer, author and general expert on the subject of "Gone with the Wind." A Georgia native who grew up just forty minutes south of Atlanta in the small village of Sharpsburg, Mr. Bridges first read Margaret Mitchell's novel of the Old South at the impressionable age of eleven. He later pursued his passion for the history of the American South while studying it at the University of Georgia in Athens where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1950. However, it was not until the early 1960s that Mr. Bridges' fascination with the subject really started. He and a friend were arguing about who portrayed Belle Watling in the 1939 film and to prove that it was Ona Munson, Mr. Bridges purchased what was to become the first piece in his collection: the Motion Picture Edition of GWTW listing the cast for the paltry sum of $1.00.
In addition to amassing thousands of items related to "Gone with the Wind" over the last forty years, Mr. Bridges has lectured extensively on the subject and has appeared on many national television programs such as The Today Show, Good Morning America, To Tell the Truth, The Mike Douglas Show and P.M. Magazine among others. His collection has been exhibited at dozens of colleges, universities, museums, historical sites, regional fairs, trade shows and tourist boards all over the United States as well as in foreign countries including Japan, France and Canada where both the book and film have a large cult following. He has also donated a part of his collection to two permanent exhibitions at The Road to Tara Museum in Jonesboro, Georgia and The Margaret Mitchell House & Museum in Atlanta, Georgia.
Mr. Bridges is also an accomplished author having published seven highly acclaimed books related to "Gone with the Wind" including the titles Scarlett Fever (1977), The Filming of Gone with the Wind (1984), "Frankly My Dear" Gone with the Wind Memorabilia (1986), Gone with the Wind: The Definitive Illustrated History of the Book, The Movie and The Legend (1989), Gone with the Wind: The Screenplay (1989) and Gone with the Wind: The Three-Day Premiere in Atlanta (1999).
Mr. Bridges has now decided the time is right to offer his memorabilia to others who share the same passion for this enduring American story that he does. Christie's is proud to offer The Herb Bridges "Gone With The Wind" Collection, one that was forty years in the making and one that is as unique as the now sixty-six year-old "Gone With The Wind" phenomenon started back in 1936 by a passionate Southern author named Margaret Mitchell.
THE ROAD TO TARA MUSEUM AND THE MARGARET MITCHELL HOUSE & MUSEUM
More than seventy years after the Civil War swept through Atlanta, a young writer named Margaret Mitchell penned a fictional account about her family's ancestral home in Jonesboro, Georgia. That book, "Gone With The Wind," became the best selling novel of all time and still sells over 250,000 copies annually worldwide.
For those who yearn to see the red earth, among other things, associated with the mythical plantation called Tara, an array of museums and attractions await in Atlanta. Well-known "Gone With The Wind" collector and expert, Herb Bridges, has generously donated many related items for permanent display at two special locations.
In Jonesboro, Scarlett O'Hara's hometown and The Official Home of Gone With The Wind, you'll find the Road to Tara Museum housing a gallery of foreign edition books, costumes and the original brass marquee from the Atlanta Loews Grand Theater. In Midtown Atlanta, visitors can enjoy The Margaret Mitchell House & Museum. Here is the apartment where she wrote the book as well as a movie museum containing the original door from the Tara set and the original oil painting titled "Scarlett in Blue."
The Road to Tara Museum and The Margaret Mitchell House & Museum wish to salute Christie's and Herb Bridges for this wonderful tribute to the legacy that is "Gone With The Wind."
