PREVIEW QUESTIONNAIRES
1939
Two preview questionnaires that Selznick International Pictures gave to audience members who had attended the sneak previews months before the film's official December 1939 release date. The first one, postmarked Sept 11, 1939 Riverside, Calif. was filled out by a Miss Harriet Ishell and reads in part ...the part where (Scarlett) shot the Yankee soldier seemed of little importance and ...I also think the dialogue of Rhett Butler and Ashley Wilkes trying to show the futility and wastifulness [sic] of such wars most appropriate. The second one, postmarked Oct 10 1936 was filled out by a Christopher Funnell and reads in part ...it is possible the scenes showing the dead & dying at the Atlanta station could be shortened without lessening the effect of the picture and ...the colors in the early sequences showing Tara seemed unnecessarily bright & a little artificial. Many other interesting observations are noted in these fun questionnaires which ultimately helped Selznick edit the film down from six hours to three and a half hours. Also inlcuded are two vintage cardboard advertisements with "GWTW" adult ticket prices listed for forty cents.
