Lot Essay

Attributed to an anonymous follower of Berruguete by Mayer and then tentatively attributed by Post to Bartolomé Castro, Diaz Padrón and Aida Padrón Mérida recognised this panel as being by the hand known as the Master of Astorga.

A native of the province of Léon, the anonymous artist was named by Post after an altarpiece that he executed for the cathedral of Astorga and other works formerly there. If the Italianizing elements of his work may have in part been learned from his contemporary Juan de Borgoña, his treatment of landscape indicates, according to Post, a familiarity with the work of Perugino and the Umbrian school. His work also shows strong Flemish influences - Post also suggested the possibility that he may have been taught by the Hispano-Flemish artist, the Master of Palanquinos also from Léon.

The present composition is close to two panels from an altarpiece by the Master in the Museo Lázaro Galdiano, Madrid, depicting Saints Dominic and Lawrence. These are also positioned full-length in front of a brocaded cloth, with a lansdcape viewed beyond.

We are grateful to Isabel Mateos for confirming the attribution on the basis of photographs.
