Lot Essay

This photograph depicts a moment in the 1895 Valkyrie III & Defender challenge. The races engendered a well publicized, bitter squabble between Lord Dunraven and the New York Yacht Club. "Yachts and ships photographed to order by G. West & Son, marine and portrait photographersthe largest collection of ships and yachts in the world." True to this advertisement they had come to America to picture the race. The firm originated in Gosport (on the Solent) in 1859 and re-located to Southsea (below Portsmouth) in 1885. They continued to do business until 1937.
