Lot Essay

In the inventory drawn up after the death of the wife of Louis-Charles de Gouffier, marquis O'Heilly, who subsequently married the daughter of Philyppeaux de Pontchartrain in 1731, a commode corresponding with the offered example is described:-
une commode de bois verni de la Chine placqu et bois de violette un grand et deux petits tiroirs fermant cl garni de poigne de cuivre en couleur. le dessus de marbre griotte de Flandre petit gris 100 livres.
This commode is characteristic of the oeuvre of the marchands-merciers in the early Louis XV period, in particular that of Thomas-Joachim Hbert and Charles Darnault. An extremely closely related commode, probably executed in the same workshop, was sold anonymously at Christie's London, 4 July 1996, lot 370 (100,500).
