Lot Essay

The artist began his career as a painter of wallpapers in Amsterdam and Haarlem. He subsequently moved to Leeuwarden, The Hague and Leiden, where he specialised in flower still lifes and landscapes, such as the present lot (see R. van Eijnden and A. van der Willigen, Geschiedenis der Vaderlandsche Schilderkunst, II, 1817, p. 372).
