Lot Essay

Mr and Mrs Guykens-Stork inhabited a townhouse on the P.C. Hooftstraat 145 in Amsterdam. The complete interior of their house was depicted by J.H. Melger Tilmes between 1885 and 1893 in 22 meticously detailed watercolours by J.H. Melger Tilmes. This series - in the collection of the Amsterdams Historisch Museum - was fully published and illustrated in W. Fock ed., Het Nederlands interieur in beeld 1600-1900, Zwolle 2001, pp. 450-453. The present lot has been identified as the painting hanging in one of the downstair's reception rooms (op.cit, p. 451, fig. D).
