Lot Essay

The present lot was executed in the 1920's as it depicts the site on the Varkenoord in Rotterdam to which the Burgerhout shipping-yard had moved in 1925. Burgerhout had started in 1853 as a foundry and construction-site on the Zalmhaven, Rotterdam. Unable to survive the crisis years, Burgerhouts was taken over by its neighbouring company Piet Smit Jr. in 1932, which in its turn closed in 1988.
