Lot Essay

This elegant form of elliptic and herm-legged pier card-table, as well as its refined antique inlay of 'Apollo' sunflowered paterae, veil drapery festoons and laurel-issuing scrolls of Roman acanthus, feature in patterns issued in Messrs A. Hepplewhite & Co's, Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guides, 1788-1794. Baldwin's hinges are also recorded on a late 18th century leather screen inventoried in 1843 at Parlington Hall, Yorkshire (C. Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam House and Lotherton Hall, Leeds, vol. II, 1978, no.319).
