Lot Essay

A closely related secretaire clothes-press was offered anonymously, Sotheby's London, 16 & 24 January 2001, lot 241. A further, similar clothes press, but without shaped panels in the doors was sold from Mere Hall, Christie's house sale, 23 May 1994, lot 131 (£7,475). The latter was attributed to Gillows and, in the same way as the present cabinet, relied on the magnificence of its finely striated and vibrantly figured mahogany for its quality.
