LA TACHE 1959
The Vineyard & History For over 200 years La Tâche has remained one of the worlds finest wines, really second only to the wines of Romanée-Conti. After remainig in the same family since 1815 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti puchased the vineyard in 1933 (then only 3.5acres). They then petitioned the French authorities to allow them to expand the vineyard, absorbing almost 11 acres of the adjoining vineyard Les Gaudichots. In 1936 it was approved and La Tâche became 14.4 acres as it is today.
The Vintage
"A giant of a vintage and, for me, the end of an era. Perfect blossoming, giving promise of an early and abundant harvest. Dry in July and August, concentrating the crop , but enough rain to swell the grapes in time for picking in warm weather from Sept. 14. Wonderful wines and, if good to begin with and kept well, affording continuing pleasure. Perhaps, with '52 running a close second the most dependable of the older vintages." MB
Provenance
These two cases were purchased upon release from the well known Manhattan wine store, Sherry-Lehmann, and were given by a very kind friend of the present owners as a gift in repayment for a favour. They have remained in a natural basement cellar in New England ever since and were in previously banded original wooden cases until my inspection.

La Tâche--Vintage 1959
Côte de Nuits, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
Levels: Lot 434 one 3cms, one 4cms, four 5cms, three 5.5cms, one 6cms & two 6.5cms. Lot 435 one 4cms, two 4.5cms, four 5cms, two 5.5cms, two 6cms & one 6.5cms.
Excellent color and appearance
Both lots in previously banded original wooden cases
"First consumed in jeroboam, in May 1980. Marvellous though I thought it lacked the raciness of the '62, more four square. Next, at the tasting at the Domaine in 1983: impressively deep, huge for La Tâche and with "30 years life" ahead. Two years later from magnum: impressively deep, rich, with lovely graduations of color; very frangrant, spicy, peppery nose; very sweet, full of alcohol, extract, flavour. Vast yet velvety. A great wine. To well beyond 2000." MB
