Rectangular, inlaid on the cover with colored ivory and shell and mother-of-pearl, with a boy reading next to a reclining ox, a bundle of brushwood beside them, the hills on which they rest togidashi and takakmaki-e with kirigane and hirame highlights, some of the flowers and leaves inlaid in mother-of-pearl or colored ivory, the sky roiro-nuri and the clouds gold takamaki-e with hirame and nashiji, the design continuing to the sides of the cover and the exterior sides of the bottom; the underside of the cover designed in brown and gold takamaki-e and silver and gold hiramaki-e with a raised platform near the edge of a field and with swallows flying above a cord hung with bird rattles, the sky dense gold and silver hirame and nashiji on a brown-lacquer ground; the removable inner tray the sky of the underside of the lid with a gilded-silver water-dropper cast as a covered boat, the saucer also silver with a gilt-metal rim and the ink stone lacquered en suite
