A Three-Tier Lacquer Sweet Stand
Edo period (19th century)
Designed as a three-tier, square stand with a flat top which forms the lid when the stand is inserted into the outer container; three shallow tiers lacquered in black, gold and silver togidashi on a mokume ground and the lid decorated in hiramaki-e with a coiling dragon on a matching ground, heart-shaped apertures lined in silver in all corners, undersides and base of the shelves nashiji; outer case decorated with a pine beach and waves in gold and black togidashi, kirigane, nashiji and kimpun on a roiro-nuri ground

Lot Essay

A paper label inside the wood storage box indicates that this tray may have been used to hold sweets. It probably was made for three different kinds of sweets to be served at an outdoor tea ceremony.
