With its sinuous lines and floral-scroll and rockwork carving, this elegant console table relates to the documented oeuvre of the Genoese sculptor Agostino Carlini (ca. 1718-1790). Carlini supplied furniture and carved wall-panelling for Huis ten Bosch near The Hague between 1749 and 1751, which was furnished in the latest rococo fashion by Stadholder Prince William IV. Among Carlini's deliveries were carved console tables for the prince's bedchamber, now painted black and gilt, which are closely related to the present lot. They too are hung from the wall, with two scrolling supports issuing from a foliate boss. These are described and illustrated in R.
