Circa 1850
Surmounted by a campana shaped body decorated with wild beasts and scrolling foliage, flanked by two fluted handles with Bachante masks and vine surround, on a gadrooned lower body, above a spreading pedestal with scrolling foliage and circular acanthus leaf surround on a square base

Lot Essay

This great vase, with its satyr-masked handles and reed enrichments, evokes celebrated wine-krater vases such as the Medici and Borghese vases; while the form of its vine-wreathed bowl recalls the antique Bacchanalian vase named after the Earl of Warwick.
