Lot Essay

The inscription records how the French artists combined images from sketchbooks to show representative occupations and races in one picture, rather than working strictly from nature. We know that Pellion used Petit's Timorese figures to fill out his own compositions. Lot 47, for example, ('Scene prise au Bazard') includes a figure originally drawn by Petit (Esclave porte du lait au Bazard, Coupang), Christie's 16 July 1993, lot 62.
