Dolpo Lama Sonam Lodro (1516-1581) was from the Dolpo and Mustang area of Western Nepal. He traveled to central Tibet and studied at Ngor Ewam monastery under the famous Lama Ngorchen Konchog Lhundrup. His relics were once interred in this stupa; see D. Snellgrove, Four Lamas of Dolpo, vol. I, 1967, for an in-depth biography of this monk.
