Lot Essay

Mukul Dey spent some time in London, working under the supervision of Lawrence Binyon at the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum. In addition to doing traditional works clearly inspired by Classical Indian Art, a letter from Binyon to the High Commissioner for India written in 1933 indicates that Dey was also very interested in Western Art and spent time studying the works of Holbein and early Italian painters.

See illustration for two of four works.
