Lot Essay

The quest for the 'abstract' within the domain of the 'ordinary', coupled with a profound sense of alienation, forms a continuous vein that runs through Padamsee's oeuvre. While the manifestations range from the timeless Metascapes to the lonely human figures, there is a sense of continuity prevalent through a similar treatment of space and use of color.

'Even the kitchen utensils bear witness to the same sense of desolation. These are not things with whose aid a man cooks food to nourish his body. They look more like strange instruments with which he tortures his spirit. And yet there is nothing macabre in all this. Everything is said simply with an almost classical restraint.' (Shamlal, Padamsee, Sadanga Series, Mumbai, 1965, p. 6 & 7.)
