FIRST EDITION of author's first book. Philip Marlowe muses at the end: "What did it matter where you lay once you are dead? In a dirty dump or in a marble tower on top a high hill? You were dead, you were sleeping the big sleep..." The 1944/46 movie of The Big Sleep staring Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart was a successful adaptation of Chandler's first Philip Marlowe novel.
