STANLEYS MEMORIAL TO HIS GRANDFATHER

A manuscript scroll, titled in 'Memorian of Moses Parry', ink on blue paper, mounted on a waxed cloth. (Some losses of text to margins and along old folds) 650 x 400mm. [New York, c.1807].

An extraordinary unrecorded memorial scroll by Stanley to his maternal grandfather Mosses Parry, who brought him up from 1841 to his death in 1845 (as per scroll). Not only is it an important record of Stanley's penmanship but he describes himself as Henry Stanley of New York, and further dedicates it to his aunt and uncle in Liverpool. Thomas and Maria Morris. The scroll quotes an inquest on the death of Moses Parry as reported by county papers. This document describes his death, by a heart attack in a potatoe field aged 75. The dedication to his Aunt and Uncle in Liverpool is curious since he appears not to have been particularly close to them, but seems to be very keen to have alternative professional assistance.
