STANLEY'S WINCHESTER
A Winchester. 44 Henry Rimfire model 1866 sporting rifle no. 33347B, circa 1870, the stock with crescent brass butt plate, the circular barrel with three-quarter length magazine, sling swivels and Winchester open sights

An emotive and personal weapon, this Winchester rifle made in the US, was almost certainly the "repeating rifle" given to Stanley in February 1870 by Edward J. Morris, the American Ambassador in Constantinople, and carried by Stanley on his expedition to Ujiji to find Livingstone. Stanley had been brought up in the mid-west and the Winchester would have been his natural first choice of weapon. The gift of this rifle by Edward Morris closed a circle for Stanley in that in 1866 he borrowed £150 from Morris to get back to America; he gave Morris a false name for a father at a New York address, and only offered to pay back the money on his return in 1870. Morris seems however to have forgiven Stanley since he recovered the funds from settlement of the case in Bursa. Morris
