Lot Essay

An interesting pair of large charcoal drawings taken from photographs, probably executed by his future wife Dorothy Tennant some time between 1886 and 1889 when Stanley returned to Africa on the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. Although Dorothy had turned down Stanley's first marriage proposal in 1886 they were married in 1890 on his return

The first charcoal drawing of Stanley is derived from the famous studio portrait photograph of Stanley by the Stereoscopic and Photographic Co., Regent Street and Cheapside, taken after his return from the Livingstone Search Expedition in 1872.
