Original green cloth, decorated in gilt and black. FIRST EDITION. Hosken p. 189; together with 4 "carte de visites" showing officers and correspondents on the Ashantee Campaign, each 98 x 157mm., mounted on card with printed caption below, one depicting Stanley among a group of war correspondents including George Henty, the famous childrens author, another of Frederick Boyle of the Daily Telegraph (slightly damaged), and the two others of British officers, including General Wolseley and his senior command.
Written on his immediate return from the Ashantee campaign, this "boys own story" account of these two military campaigns in Africa, was, for Stanley, a good follow up to 'How I found Livingstone'. The four group portraits are very rare, and show Stanley (unusually) amongst his fellow journalists rather than the explorer. (5)
