STANLEY'S TWO-DAY CHRONOMETER
A Victorian brass-bound mahogany two-day marine chronometer with Poole auxiliary, by Henry Hughes & Son, London, No. M/o71: [1886]. This silvered brass dial signed HENRY HUGHES & SON, 59 Fenchurch St., London, inscribed within the seconds dial the number M/1071 and 'AUXILIARY COMPENSATION', Roman Low numberals, Arabic outer '5 minute' intermarkers, gold hour and minute hands, subsidiary seconds and up-and-down dials with blued steel hands, fusee and chain movement, Earnshaw escapement, cut bi-metallic balance with Poole auxiliary, cylindrical heat compensation weight, blued steel helical balance spring, spring foot detent with jewelled locking stone, brass bowl and gimbal in three-tier flame hahogany box with quarter-round brass edging and double line brass stringing to front and top lid, the middle section with applied bone disc inscribed HENRY HUGHES AND SON, 59 FENCHURCH ST. LONDON, flush recessed brass handles. The dial 105mm. diam; the box 180mm. square.

This chronometor was made for Henry Hughes & Son by Thomas Mercer of St. Albans in 1886.
