Lot Essay

The Parke photograph and inscription recalls the Stanley's honeymoon in July 1890, Dorothy writes: "On Saturday July 12, 1890, I was married to Stanley, at Westminster Abbey. He was very ill at the time, with gastritis and malaria, but his powerful will enabled him to go through with the ceremony. We went straight to Melchet Court, lent to us for our honeymoon by Louisa, Lady Ashburton. Stanley's officer, Surgeon Parke, accompanied us, and together we nursed Stanley back to health." (Autobiography, p.423.)
