FREEDOM OF THE CITY OF DUNDEE, June 1890
A Victorian silver rectangular Freedom Casket, the sides repoussé, chased and engraved with views of Dundee in ovals between shaped panels of foliate scrolls, on four scroll and paw feet, the domed hinged cover with two views of the journey in Africa and meeting with Emin Pasha, Stanley's cypher and inscribed oval in scroll borders, the engraved inscription reading 'The Freedom of the City and Royal Burgh of Dundee (The Certificate of which is enclosed in this Casket) was by the unanimous vote of the Lord Provost, Magistrates and Town Council conferred on Henry M. Stanley, Esquire, in honour of his explorations on the continent of Africa and his services to geographical science. Council Chambers, 14th June, 1890', with stepped mount and finial of the city's arms with supporters, boxed with pale blue silk lining, maker's mark of Whytock & Son, Dundee, 1890, in original leather box (covers detached). 8¾in. (22.2cm.) long, 36oz. (1,124gr.) gross.
Enclosed in the casket is the vellum manuscript scroll creating H.M. Stanley a free Burgess of the City and Royal Burgh of Dundee of the First Class, dated 19th May 1890.
