EDISON WAX PHONOGRAPH CYLINDERS

A collection of 18 wax phonograph cylinders with loose hand-written labels; 2 with applied labels Recorded at Edison House, London (Bagpipes by John Mackenzie and Recitation by Mr Beaumont); and six unmarked cylinders, in fitted mahogany box (several damaged).

The titles comprise: Messages from American Senators to Mr H.M. Stanley (Grams 1-5); Col. John Hay to Mr H.M. Stanley; (Gram 2) As Miss Tennant enters Grand March by E. Silas; Col. Gourand; Mr Tennant; Mrs H.M. Stanley Baroness Burdett-Coutts; No.1. Organ as Mr Stanley enters march from the occasional overture (Handel); No 3 Organ as Mr & Mrs Stanley leave Wedding March Mendelssohn; Band Coldstream Guards; ... March 10, 1893... of Wordsworth, Swinburne, Tennyson; H. Myers. March 10, 1893 Samples of Sophocles, Pindar, Homer, Virgil (some mistakes owings to slips of memory.); Clarinet & Piano; Mrs Tennant, children etc; Song Mr Jackson Gourand. No1.

The Stanley family's collection of phonographs, mostly wedding and family pieces but including 5 cylinders with various messages recorded by American Senators on the occasion of his visit to Washington in 1890, as part of his American Lecture Tour. The inclusion of classical texts such as Homer and Pindar reinforces Stanley's interest (in his retirement) in the classical world. (26)
